CEOSF Updates: Summer 2024

 SUMMER 2024 - The Foundation has been busy at more conferences and regional meetings in North America over the last few months. We have welcomed some amazing new people to the team, created new state partnerships, elected new officers to the Board, and continue to advocate for the safety of our profession! We are so grateful for the passionate volunteers we have and for all of your support. Help us share our message and resources by sending our information to colleagues and organizations. "The Code Enforcement Officer Safety Foundation exists to promote best practices for the safety of Code Officials across the world; to provide a resource for officials; report incidents; provide up-to-date training and to encourage a high standard of professionalism within our chosen profession."

 

 

Welcome Our New Regional Representatives

 


LAQUITA ALEXANDER (Georgia)

LaQuita was appointed as the Region 8 Representative by the Board of Directors in May 2024. She is a Code Enforcement Manager in Georgia and is a Certified Land & Erosion Inspector and Plan Reviewer. LaQuita is an AACE Rising Star Nominee. She earned her Code Official Safety Specialist (COSS).


 

KEITH P. GORDON (Pennsylvania)

Keith was appointed as the Region 7 Representative by the Board of Directors in May 2024. He is an Assistant Code Enforcement Manager. His extensive background includes 37 as a Police Supervisor and SWAT plus 50 years a volunteer Firefighter (8 years as Chief). Keith also achieved his ICC Credential of Learning Achievement - Code Official Safety in addition to MCEP, CBO, and BCO.


 

 

NEW PARTNERSHIP’S ANNOUNCED!

The Foundation is excited to introduce two new state partners! The South Dakota Municipal League (SDML) and the Code Enforcement League of Arizona (CELA) Boards of Directors voted to approve our partnership. We thank them for their support of officer safety and the CEOSF Mission.

 


COAA Conference - Orange Beach, AL

Thank you Code Officials Association of Alabama for inviting the Foundation out to your conference to teach and interact with your members! We appreciate receiving the “2024 Vendor Award” and thank the Board for their support.

 



Oklahoma Code Enforcement Training

Thank you Oklahoma Code Enforcement Association for sharing our information at your training for Code Enforcement Officers. CEOSF Vice President Travis Guess and Regional Representative Jessica Green shared resources with attendees.


Ontario, Canada Conference - OAPSO 

Thank you Ontario Association of Property Standards Officers Board of Directors for their support of our partnership and for having us at the conference to teach officer safety. COSCI Darrell Revier and Regional Representative Jeanette Loven were excited to interact with all the By-Law Officers!

 




Animal Care EXPO - San Antonio, TX

The Foundation was excited to have a booth and host several Coffee Chats at this large conference with over 2,000+ attendees! Regional Representative and Senior ACO, Jeanette Loven hosted the Coffee Chats and shared resources about officer safety.  

 


 

CACEO Quarterly Training - Colorado

CEOSF Secretary/Treasurer Jeremy Kovinchick and Regional Representative Jeanette Loven presented on “Understanding the Threat” and handed out some swag. Congratulations to the winner of the COSS scholarship! Thank you CACEO (Colorado) for having us at your quarterly training! We appreciate the partnership and focus on Officer safety. We had a great time with the group!

Rural Code Enforcement: Challenges & Solutions

I’m the Chief Code Enforcement Officer and the only Code Enforcement Officer for my county in North Georgia. The counties that are contiguous to mine, with few exceptions, are the same way. Most of us are in unsworn positions; therefore, we don’t carry firearms in the course of our duties. We are fortunate if we have body armor and non-lethal means of defense such as pepper spray, ASP batons, or Tasers. Most of us don’t have readily available backup, as most jurisdictions have only three to four, sometimes less, Sheriff’s Deputies on duty at a time. ICC Credential of Learning Achievement - COSS

The International Code Council (ICC) partnered and sponsored CEOSF in May of 2021. Since then, the two organizations have collaborated to promote safety of code officials across the globe. In November 2022, we officially launched the Credential of Learning Achievement (CLA) through ICC. This reinforces the support ICC has for officer safety and the Foundation. Current and future graduates of the COSS training can log into their MyICC account under credentials and take the 1-hour exam for $65. You will need to upload your official COSS certificate prior to taking the exam. Once you pass, you will receive an ICC credential certificate and digital badge to show with pride!
